McDowell, 44, grew up in Kentucky, in the American Midwest, alongside her twin sister. The fact that the only other Argentine writer to win the award was Julio Cortázar, for his popular book Hopscotch - and that Megan has a hopscotch tattooed on her arm - is the kind of detail that seems to suggest that her bright future was a foretold story. Her translation of Seven Empty Houses won Samanta Schweblin the prestigious National Book Award in 2022. Neither the waitress nor the sailors have the remotest idea that McDowell is a world star in the field. She’s at Bar Kentucky, an American-style, baroque bar in Barcelona, Spain, which appears frozen in the year 1951. The waitress has just asked her to translate what the pair of tipsy New Zealand sailors at the back of the bar are saying. Sitting on a stool that was once bolted to the ground to prevent marines passing through town from starting the kind of fights that end badly, Megan McDowell has a task to perform. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Boyfriend Material by Alexis HallOr "Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake," out in 2021, features a bisexual single mother on a baking competition who is in a love triangle with two men. "I wanted to write a really angsty, emotions-y, really classic historical romance," Hall said. "A Lady for a Duke," for example, features a trans woman in a Regency era setting, reconnecting with her best friend from whom she had once been separated on a battlefield. But they are united in containing characters across the queer spectrum. Hall calls himself "genrequeer" because he has written so many types of escapist romances, from rom-coms to historical books. An unbridled one-more-chapter-oh-no-its-3am delight.' - KJ Charles 'Alexis Hall is the undisputed master of romantic comedy. Its absurdly funny and swoonily romantic, with a sharp edge of wit and observation that keeps the story bounding along. But the other hand, I think there is value in there being a choice," Hall said. ' Boyfriend Material is the joyfully queer British romcom escape book I didnt know I needed. There are people that don’t like the kind of books I write for that reason. Something that is more unflinching and less escapist has real value to a lot of people and other people. “There are plenty of people who find real value in darker stories, because there are people for whom that speaks to their real experience. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Lore olympus by rachel smytheLore Olympus has also been previously nominated for an Eisner Award and Ringo Award. Mephistophelian beard notwithstanding, he’s also a thoroughly nice chap if you run into him at a con or event, if somewhat a little over-fond of creepy-crawly sort of things. Studying zoology and psychology at Reading, he then worked for a solicitor’s in Leeds, West Yorkshire, where he now lives and cuts a tall, imposing figure. Tchaikovsky, born in Lincolnshire in 1972, had a varied career before he became a full-time writer in 2018. Adrian Tchaikovsky loves spiders almost as much as you hate them. His work is on an epic scale, crossing galaxies and tackling the big themes – aliens, artificial intelligence, the relationship between magic and technology, the divide between gods and mortals. Adrian Tchaikovsky is, if you’ll excuse the painfully obvious pun, a maestro of science fiction and fantasy. 6/26/2023 0 Comments Slammed book reviewShe moves to Michigan with her family because their family’s fortune.
